Katie Peitsch – Craft Beer Brewer

14 Nov Katie Peitsch – Craft Beer Brewer

Left big pharma to make her and our dreams come true. Especially on hot summer days. Cheers!

Your childhood dream job?

Archeologist or paleontologist.

Your first job?

Lab technician in a medical device company (first job after my undergraduate degree).

Your current job?

Brewer (plus production planning, sales, events, etc.).

What makes it your dream job?

There are many factors: I look forward to heading to the brewery every morning. I’m passionate about craft beer and excited to be part of an industry where my colleagues share that passion and excitement. One of my favorite parts of the job is talking to customers about the beers we make — the story behind the beer, the brewing process, etc. The work usually doesn’t feel like work, even when I’m doing monotonous tasks like washing kegs, cleaning tanks (brewing is 90% cleaning!), labeling beer bottles and packing them in boxes. There’s something very gratifying about making a product and handing it to a customer. Ultimately, I’m happy to be doing what I’m doing and am glad I took the risk of leaving my (potentially) secure job in pharma.

Take a chance, take a risk. If you’re not doing something you are passionate about, try to find it. If you don’t burn your bridges on the way out, you can always go back to what you’re doing now.

Besides a lot of sweat and commitment, how did you make your dream come true?

After finishing my PhD, I met the guys at the brewery. I was unemployed for 10 months and started to spend more time at the brewery: washing bottles, working the bar, developing recipes with the head brewer. I left to do a postgraduate fellowship at Novartis (a position which required my education/experience) in the fall of 2013. During that time, the brewery was expanding into a larger space and was in need of another brewer. Knowing my interest in the craft beer industry, the guys from the brewery asked if I wanted to join the team and brew beer. How did I come to my decision? I thought, “I can always go back to a desk job — I’ll have a year of experience under my belt. Now is the time to try this, (especially while I’m physically able) so I’m not asking myself in 20 years ‘what if..?”

Your words of inspiration for those still looking for their dream job?

Take a chance, take a risk. If you’re not doing something you are passionate about, try to find it. If you don’t burn your bridges on the way out, you can always go back to what you’re doing now.
